Haiku on Trees by Grade 11 Bejamin

I discussed Haiku writing in my 21st Century Literature class. When I presented the topic before my students, varied reactions surfaced and I didn't detect an indication of excitement among them. Nevertheless, I proceeded by presenting examples of what I wrote previously. Then, got to make them see the structure and the content. As I was assured of their understanding of the ideas presented I pointed out a subject for Haiku writing - the towering Talisay tree standing right in the vicinity. First I asked them questions on the benefits of the tree and told them to focus on which they think is the most significant. Then, I let them describe the tree as they see it and come up with figurative or poetic versions of those words. Editing and revisions came afterwards. After 15 minutes or so, these they came up with as I wrote on the board.

Nature's breathtaking formation: Palawan Underground River

Of the places I've been to, this one totally put me in awe. The stalactite and stalagmite formations amazed me the core that no exact words would come out for me to appropriately describe what I saw in the place. No filter, no camera trick, whatsoever. Further, the photographs summarize my group's  45-minute tour in the subterranean river.

Tongue Twisters on TH sound

Discussing the /θ/ and the /ð/ to second language learners is not that easy considering that these sounds are inexistent in their own language. Producing these two sounds and pronouncing words with them have always been a challenge. Having observed them, I let them pronounce a number of words indicating the sounds mentioned. After the speaking drill, we read a tongue twister featuring the sounds discussed. Then, I assigned them to a dyadic grouping and explained the instructions on composing tongue twisters using the words that they have learned. I gave them fifteen minutes to work on the task and some of them came up with the following:

Thomas needs time to think through those tink sounds that the thick three trees make than to think of the true honest man that he met in the three trees thickened with ticks.
by : Andre Que and Ron Cruz

The ticking clock's thick hand stopped from ticking when the thick hand of the ticking clock pointed at three in the afternoon.
by: Shanie Aguilar, Naomi de Leon and Krista San Juan

The truck lost track and hit the rootless thick tree. Thus making the truck that hit the rootless thick tree lost three tires.
by: Sam German and Marc Gapas

The thick three ticks on the three thin trees thrust through a footpath between the two thick ticks but Athena bothered them while they thrust themselves through a thin footpath.
by: Michelle Angeline De Peralta and Julian Llenard Caideron

The thin man thinks that the three thin glasses were torn into thousand pieces as a thick stick thrusts through these.
by: Gilmark Ramirez and Angela Manarpiis

The youth's thoughts turn thorny as their faith fades but those who think through thick and thin breathe better and find fine weather.
by: Jessyca Pagalanan and Khirsewell Amagsila

Tello the builder builds a building for bathing but his limited tools let him build a building unfit for bathing.
by: Adrian Cahilig and Emman Villamejor

The authentic thick tick-tock clock ticks so loud that the owner can hear every tick-tock of the authentic thick clock through the three-fold thin walls.
by: Jan Vergel Victor Serrano and Ioannis de Jesus

Therese thought that she should thank the tree trustworthy tree cutters who spent time cutting three thousand thick trees in three months.
by: Lyann Medina and Reniela dela Paz

Not every group was able to present a very good output. Nevertheless, I’m proud of my learners as they demonstrated their understanding of the lesson.
