Exodus 20: 7-11
7 “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will
not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by
keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the
seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work,
neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor
your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the
LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he
rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made
it holy.
Title: Sabbath is
a Holy Day, not a HOLIDAY
Message: God is the
LORD of all and His name must not be used in vain. He deserves our praise and
worship at the time He appointed, the Sabbath day. Hence, we cease working and
doing worldly tasks and activities on the 7th day of the week. These are the third and the fourth
commandments of the Lord.
Promise to Claim: Sabbath is
blessed by God and so are we. Through it, we are provided not only a day of
rest but above all a day to replenish our souls. We are directed to keep
ourselves holy so that we can keep up to His standards. That’s how great God’s
love is for us.
Command to Obey: Do not use
the name of God in vain. Never say “Praise the Lord” or “God bless you” if you
do not mean it. Do not ever use His holy name to impress others. Observe rest
on Sabbath day and make that day holy by attending service and worshiping Him. Do
not make that day an excuse for laziness.
Warning to Heed: “…the LORD
will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name” (v.7). He does not delight
in our unconcern regarding the Sabbath as He made it to benefit us, for us to
rest, for us to have time to communicate with Him, adore and serve Him, and for
us to demonstrate our being His children.
Application: I will
never use the name of God to impress others or to gain people’s attention. I
will observe rest on Sabbath day and set such as my time to serve Him. I will
not regard Sabbath day a holiday and I will not spend such time doing worldly activities
with my fellows.
