Answers to Module 4 - Face-to-Face Communication

Module 4 – Face-to-Face Communication

SAQ 4-1
1.    The principal basically calls for a one-on-one session either with me or my fellow academic coordinator as she seeks out suggestions on something, wants reports on certain accomplishments or activities and others. Based on my experience, all the items mentioned are basically observed, especially the last three items:
·         Listen to what the other person has to say.
·         Let the other person make suggestions and choose first.
·         Ask permission to make a suggestion.
2.    I find all of the items applicable also for an employee or a subordinate as proven by my experience. However,  should I be asked to revise the guidelines to really suite other employees, I would have:
#1 Anticipate questions to be asked and be prepared to answer them.
#2 Demonstrate respect in asking questions should an opportunity to do so arise and be
specific.
#3 the same
#4 the same
#5 Agree/disagree with the idea or opinion and not with the person.
#6 Be sincere about your comments and do not take disagreement personally.
Activity 4-2
1.    Student Organization Meeting
Participants:Drama Club members
Agenda:
1.    Dramafest 2014
a.    objectives
b.    people involved/assignments
c.    plays to present
d.    cast of characters
e.    rehearsal schedules

2.    Whenever I facilitate a team meeting, I see to it that we do not exceed the one hour limit as students are not allowed to stay in school for more than an hour after classes. I make it a point of discussing only what really matters; thus, preparing the agenda does not take much of my time.

SAQ 4-2
So far, I have not experienced attending a meeting that did not go well. However, I had the opportunity to participate in a seminar, which made me see how important readiness and humility are to a facilitator. The speaker claimed to be an expert and knowledgeable about the topic. However, when questions were cast by the participants none was satisfactorily answered plus the fact that she sounded arrogant. After the session participants gave negative comments as we ended up even more confused rather than enlightened.

SAQ 4-3
Based on the descriptions given on FGD, I don’t think I experienced attending one.  Therefore, I cannot provide answers to questions.

Activity 4-3
Topic: Standards-based Assessments
1)  FGD participants would be the three academic coordinators, the two principals – one from the Elem. Dept and the other from High School Dept, and an expert in assessment construction. The academic coordinators are responsible for monitoring the subject teachers’ activities and evaluating their peformances depending on their subject area assignment. The principals, on the other hand, give the final evaluation of all teachers and make decisions where trainings and faculty development seminars are concerned.

2)  For the discussion I would pose the following questions:
a. How do you find the teachers’ performance where Standards-based assessments
      are concerned?
            b. Will you cite sample items from the teacher’s work to help us see your point?
            c. As the academic coordinator, what have you done to make the teacher see her
errors in assessment construction?
            d. Has anyone of you here had the same experience?
            e. How did you deal with the situation?
            f. Is there anybody who had a different experience?
            g. Do the principals find these situations problematic? Why?
            h. As administrators, what do you think you need to do to help the teachers
                  overcome the challenges  mentioned?
            g. Among our teachers, who demonstrate great difficulty in constructing standards-
                  based  assessments?
            h. What do you think would best help teachers in complying with the requirements of
SBA?

3) I’ll hold the FGD at the Kuhala Bay Resort as I find this place very suitable for the said activity. Prior to FGD, I will inform the academic coordinators and the principals and let them know of the agenda so that they’ll have time to review their teachers’ performance and outputs where SBA is concerned. The expert would be formally notified of the activity and everything which concerns it.

4) As for the preparation of FGD, I anticipate challenges in budgeting all the expenses including the honorarium to be extended to the expert as the price depends upon the guest’s title and proximity of residence. Since our school observes budget standards for activities, to these I must comply although I sometimes find complying with it difficult if I happen to invite someone who deserves an honorarium greater than expected. In conducting FGD arguments among the participants could not be avoided and that not all of them would truly participate in the discussion is expected. Based on experience, not everyone really pays attention as others speak or give their opinion on anything which may arise during the group discussion. To address any of the challenges, I would remind the participants that respect and humility must be observed and that full participation is required from everyone as the discussion goes on.
