Why do wives in San Pablo lakes sail the raft?

In the Philippines, husbands generally work for the family and wives are found at home doing the household chores. However, there is this part of the country wherein the opposite of the situation takes place. In San Pablo, Laguna seeing wives, young and old alike, sail bamboo rafts in the lakes for the tourists is a usual sight. They manage the operations of the rafts as their husbands are at home and are doing the household chores. Wives assist the tourists as they go about the location and enjoy the beauty of the lakes. When asked why there seems to an exchange of roles between husbands and wives in that certain place, a wife answered, “Because we value respect and decency here.”

According to the wives, women tourists specifically those who are from Western countries board on the raft with their skimpy bikinis, others even go nude in the middle of the lake and men could not bear such a sight. Men of the place respect women that much that they don’t want to take advantage of seeing the latter almost naked or totally naked.  Hence, they let their wives assist the visitors.Observing the situation, I can say that wives themselves seem to favor the idea because they happily perform the task and willingly attend to every visitor’s request as the bamboo raft sails in the middle of the lake.
